Maker Education in Action: Sustainable Development Community Design Project

For the second year running, the Citizenship and Social Development Department has collaborated with the Department of Applied Social Sciences of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong in conducting the Solnno Design Education Programme for our Form 4 IAL class.

A series of seven lessons was held to help scaffold students’ cooperative problem-based learning through the design thinking approach.

The class was tasked with developing prototypes that would improve the liveability and sustainability of the neighbouring community through research, discussions and presentations. STEM elements, such as laser cutting, 3D printing, animation and app design, were integrated in the learning process.

The students will incorporate their primary findings into an individual end-of-term paper on “The Ideal and Sustainable City in 2030” later this year.

Many thanks to the PolyU Social Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation for running the wonderful programme online and hosting the inspiring workshops in their design lab.

Celebrating our 170 years of heritage, we are committed to empowering our students to discover how we can build our future and contribute to the sustainable development of the planet.
